About this unique piece:

This exceptional viola dates from Saxon-Bohemian production around 1910 and offers some special features. Starting with the wound rim and double purfling, to the carved lion head instead of the scroll, to the overall small dimensions: there is a lot to discover.

The model crafted after Jacob Stainer presents the typical quickly rising top and back arching, which is reflected accordingly in the sound. It is balanced, full and soft – assertive in the lows, subtle in the mids and sweet in the highs. At the same time, the sound always retains its smoothness and is pleasant to the ear of the player. While the fullness of the tone comes to the fore in piano, it makes room for a more focused timbre in forte. The advantage of the viola is therefore not so much in virtuoso solo playing, but rather in attentive playing that allows one to notice – and discover for oneself – a broader horizon.
