About this unique piece:

This wonderful double bass from the renowned bass workshop E.M.Pöllmann first impresses with its, by Pöllmann standards, unusually straightforward and clear aesthetics. Lightly flamed maple for back, neck and sides, as well as a wide grained spruce top were chosen as tone woods. You can see Pöllman’s typical, rather long crafted top and back arching and neat details on the neck, scroll and purfling. The bright, golden-brown, transparent varnish, which over the years has begun to show some patina, is certainly a bright spot in any orchestra pit.
High-quality components made of fine ebony (fingerboard and tailpiece) as well as the original Rubner tuners from 1957 complete the image.

In addition to the use in the orchestra, which is known and appreciated worldwide with Pöllmann basses, this instrument can also be used elsewhere and, when bowed, stands out with its good response in all pitches and rich undertones. Pizzicato, however, it is also convincing and scores with its clean, well-defined, full bass tones that bring a lot of joy in playing.

When you hear the name E.M. Pöllmann, you naturally think of the elaborately decorated instruments made by the universally known bass workshop in Mittenwald, Bavaria. However, many people don’t know that Pöllmann basses have only been built there since the 1960s and have their origins in Markneukirchen, Saxony.
That’s exactly where this 4-string instrument was also built in 1957 by Erich-Max Pöllmann and his nephew Günter Kramer, shortly before the workshop moved to Bavaria in 1959 for political and economic reasons. So one can rightly claim that this bass carries a piece of German-German history and is a genuine instrument of Vogtland tradition.

Our double basses, like all the instruments we offer, have been carefully inspected, authenticated and professionally repaired by our bass luthiers and restorers prior to sale. As a standard and for better comparison, all double basses at Finostri are fitted with French bridges and Belcanto strings of the Thomastik-Infeld brand. The latter can also be heard on the sound samples available below. If you have different playing habits or are looking for a specific sound experience, our team will be happy to help you with words and deeds in order to make your dream instrument ready to play and adjust it according to your personal wishes.
